About S.M.A.R.T. technology
S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting
Technology.
S.M.A.R.T. is an
industry standard for monitoring and reporting fault conditions in a peripheral
storage device, whether from damage or normal wear-and-tear. S.M.A.R.T.
is intended to decrease the chance of data loss by giving adequate warning
to these conditions, but it is no replacement for good disaster-recovery
planning.
How S.M.A.R.T. Work?
A S.M.A.R.T. drive monitors the internal performance of the motors,
media, heads, and electronics of the drive, while our software monitors
the overall reliability status of the drive. The reliability status is
determined through the analysis of the drive's internal performance level
and the comparison of internal performance levels to predetermined threshold
limits.
S.M.A.R.T.-capable
drives can monitor several key performance factors to assess reliability
and predict an impending device failure. However, S.M.A.R.T. cannot possibly
detect all impending failures. S.M.A.R.T. should be treated as an advisory
service, and not a substitute for regularly backing-up your files.
Keeping your data
safe can only be ensured by making back-up copies on a regular basis.
The S.M.A.R.T. features of any device should not be considered a substitute
for planning-ahead.
